Why do you think the painting of a car is so pricey? Painting a car is a complex process. It’s not the same as to paint a wall. It requires some skills but it doesn’t mean you can’t do it yourself.

Just follow our guide:

What you will need

Time and place

The job can take up to several days or a couple of weekends. That’s why you will need to find a garage or a shed. After that, you are ready to gather the materials.

  • masking tape
  • making paper
  • spray gun
  • air compressor
  • paint thinners

  • face masks
  • safety glasses

Supplies amount

Small and medium-sized vehicles:

  • 1 gallon of base coat/primer
  • 3 gallons of topcoat
  • 2/3 gallons of clear coat/primer

Large vehicles:

  • 1.5 gallons of base coat
  • 4 gallons of topcoat
  • 3-4 gallons of clear-coat lacquer

You can find the original color of your car on the car’s compliance plate if you are going to use this color. An auto paint shop will help you match it as well.

Prepare your workstation

Clean your working area:

  • sweep the floors of the garage
  • make sure you have enough space to work
  • hose down the area with water to settle the dust
  • ensure that the weather is conducive for painting
  • don’t work under trees or anything that can drop debris
  • decide what you want to paint. Some cars in the car will need mechanical knowledge.
  • mask off the areas you don’t want to paint

Sanding

When you start sanding make sure you remove the clear coat, top coat, and the base coat. Do it in circular motions.

After the sanding wipes down your car with a clean rag and paints thinners. Wait until the surface will be completely dry.

Priming

First, wear your face mask and goggles to protect your eyes and lungs from the paint. Then,

  • use a scrap of metal to practice your skill
  • hold the spray gun 6 inches from the surface
  • spray from side to side, press the trigger only when you move the gun
  • Depending on the type of paint and paint car directions mix the primer with thinners;
  • start priming your car from the roof down. To cover the surface evenly you will need 2-3 coats to cover.

After the priming resands your car with 2000-grit sandpaper and wipes it again with thinners and a clean rag. Don’t use much thinner as it can wipe the primer.

Painting

  • Thin the topcoat according to the recommended ratios on the back of the paint can;
  • Use the same technique as with the primer to paint your coat applying 3-4 coats of paint; Use the recommended drying time. You can find it in the paint can;
  • Before the last topcoat wipe down the car again with a clean rag;
  • Repeat the previous steps with the lacquer, covering 1-2 coats;
  • Remove the masking tape from all the areas;
  • Inspect the finished job. If you found some imperfections you can repeat the process in these spots.

If you are still unsure about the painting for yourself, find the people who can do this for you on Swapix Nigeria. It can cost you cheaper.
